Carnival 2026

Carnaval de los Diablos
Villa de Zaachila, Oaxaca

Photos from the 2026 Devils and Love Eggs parade during Carnaval de los Diablos in Villa de Zaachila, Oaxaca. A vivid fusion of tradition, movement, and community spirit. My images highlight the striking red and black devil masks and elaborate costumes rooted in Zapotec identity, as dancers surge through the streets in clouds of flour and confetti. A central focus is the playful ritual of cascarones—“love eggs” cracked over young women’s heads in a symbolic gesture of courtship (I also was targeted, but assume this was a separate gesture!). We experienced candid expressions of laughter and surprise, intertwined with the intricate textile details, and the rhythmic motion of brass bands. The parade culminated in a celebration in the main town square with Danza de la Pluma (dancers wear towering feathered headdresses) and a fake wedding performed by individuals in masks. Together, we witnessed a story of cultural continuity, humor, and communal celebration that defines this iconic Oaxacan carnival.
